Earth 2 made it into the hands of the children at the Child Educational Center’s School-Age Program at Paradise Canyon Elementary School (PCY) following successful bake sales at our other two La Canada Elementary School sites.

The children at PCY were fascinated with how Earth 2 was created, asking questions such as “Who was the person who made this globe?” and “What materials were used to make it?” Curious about its purpose, we discussed the project and asked the children what ways they could help in caring for the earth. The children suggested driving electric vehicles, reducing, reusing, and recycling, using less paper, only using one paper cup per day in the classroom, and picking up trash. They all agreed that these were easy ways to make a difference, both at school and at home.

Inspired by our discussion, the children quickly got to work setting up a paper recycling bin and placing a marker near the water dispenser so that names could be written on cups and saved each day for repeated use.

In addition to classroom ideas, the children wanted to do something for local areas in California that suffered wildfires this past winter. They discussed the importance of trees, and together agreed to raise money for the replanting of burn areas. Instead of a traditional bake sale, they decided to sell crafts and snacks, making homemade tortillas, fresh fruit salsa, applesauce, popcorn, and various crafts.

The sale was a huge success, raising close to $290 for wildfire restoration through the organization One Tree Planted. The children were so proud and happy to take these steps to help our planet.

Feeling loved and supported, Earth 2 made its way to the CEC’s School-Age Program at Westridge School for Girls.
