To finish its grand tour of the Child Educational Center’s School-Age Programs, Earth 2 made it to our Oak Grove site to visit with the children of the “Whale Room.”
With great excitement and dedication, we gathered to hold the globe, passing it around and discussing what the earth means to us and what ways we can support it. The children were so excited to discover the migrating whales on Earth 2 and felt that it was a special connection to them being in the Whale Room.
In brainstorming what our special project would be, we learned of the success of the bake sales at our fellow School-Age sites and thought it would be a perfect way to make an even greater collective impact. The children agreed that together we would bake a collection of tasty baked good to sell and raise money for the organization One Tree Planted, which supports the planting of trees all over the world.
The sale included homemade scones, muffins, trail mix, gluten-free treats, cornbread, and homemade berry trifles. In addition to increasing their ecological awareness and environmental stewardship, the children also learned about choosing items to sell, the elements of baking and preparing food, counting and making change, communicating, collaborating, and working as a team. By the end of the two-day sale, the children had raised over $600.00, which translates to 600 trees that will be planted.
The Whale Room children were blown away with how much they were able to raise and hope that it will make a positive impact on the world. We are beyond grateful to have participated in this project and cannot wait to see what Earth 2 inspires next.
