Living close to the California coast, in such close proximity to the Pacific and observing how the watershed of the Santa Monica mountains works, carrying all the waste and debris into our oceans, choking out the life in them, serves as a stark and daily reminder how fragile life on Earth is. We all know that Earth is more water than land mass, but while crocheting #26, I came to realize how much more blue than green our planet truly is and it emphasized the importance to return our oceans to being free of plastics, healthy and thriving.

When I first was introduced to the Carry The Earth project, I immediately fell in love with the approach of bringing environmental issues into people’s homes and their own hands and excited to learn about all the different responses. Having been an environmental activist my entire life, it was always apparent to me that the solution would have to involve every single human being. To get the message across about how dire the state of affairs is, I had painfully learned over the past years that it would not be through reiteration of facts but rather through storytelling and imagination.

All these aspects of climate action are beautifully built into the Carry The Earth project and I cannot wait to find out what the carriers of #26 will come up with to heal/help our beautiful blue home.
